Shareen knew she was interested in fashion from an early age, designing her own line of clothing in 1996, and producing a fashion show in 1998. Despite her intrigue with the arts, she pursued a degree at the University of Toronto, graduating with honours in Psychology and Philosophy.
World travels brought her eyes, hands and mind back to her interest in tangible beauty. While in Australia, she began making large choker necklaces from silver, gold and crystal and found herself frequently visiting opal shops. In Thailand, she lingered in front of jewellery and gem stores and perused stands selling sterling jewellery. Upon her return home a year later she enrolled in a three year program at George Brown College, studying the art of jewellery. Training included courses in metalsmithing, gemology, design, gemsetting, production, casting, business and more. She knew this was it: she wanted to design and create jewellery.
Upon graduation from the program, and while beginning her career as a studio jeweller, her first gallery show was with her fellow jewellery school graduates at Bounty Gallery at Harbourfront Center in downtown Toronto. Born by the sea in Halifax and enjoying a lengthy swimming career as both a competitor and a coach, Shareen finds herself inspired by water. You will see these blue, aqua and turquoise ocean colours reflected in much of her jewellery. She looks to fluid, organic shapes for inspiration. You will also notice a glimmer of something funky and retro amidst the clean lines of her designs.
Currently operating out of a full jewellery studio at her home in Toronto, Shareen is designing and creating jewellery for a living. This is something that makes her truly happy. Working closely with clients to design the perfect piece of jewellery for a gift, for an engagement, or simply for a client’s own pleasure, is something that Shareen finds very rewarding. There is nothing like seeing that look of satisfaction as an idea becomes a sketch that becomes a beautiful object.
